Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ)
The ADIZ (Air Defence Identification Zone) is a security zone: before you enter it, and while you fly in it, you must be identifiable (CAR 602.145).
- File a flight plan or flight itinerary with an ATS unit or a community aerodrome radio station before takeoff (CAR 602.145).
- Make a position report by radio as soon as possible after takeoff: location, altitude, aerodrome of departure, and the estimated time and point of ADIZ entry (CAR 602.145).
- The dimensions of the ADIZ are published in the Designated Airspace Handbook (CAR 602.145).
Trap: the ADIZ is about national security identification, not IFR/VFR separation; a VFR flight is not exempt, you still file and report.
